Why Choose Abaco for Your Wedding
The Abacos are the Bahamas' best-kept secret for couples who want something different. While Nassau offers cosmopolitan variety and Exuma delivers sandbar drama, Abaco gives you something neither can match: the authentic Out Islands experience with world-class sailing infrastructure.
The Abaco chain stretches over 120 miles and includes dozens of cays, each with its own character. Hope Town on Elbow Cay has pastel colonial buildings and the iconic candy-striped lighthouse — one of the most photographed structures in the Bahamas. Green Turtle Cay feels like stepping back in time, with its New England-influenced architecture and the legendary Green Turtle Club. Treasure Cay boasts a 3.5-mile beach that National Geographic ranked among the world's top ten.
What truly sets Abaco apart for weddings is the water. The Sea of Abaco is one of the most protected cruising grounds in the world, with calm waters sheltered by a chain of barrier cays. This makes Abaco the yachting and sailing capital of the Bahamas — and the ideal setting for yacht weddings, marina ceremonies, and celebrations that involve island-hopping between cays by boat.
Since Hurricane Dorian in 2019, the Abacos have undergone an extraordinary rebuilding. Resorts have been renovated, marinas rebuilt, and the community's spirit is stronger than ever. Couples who choose Abaco today are celebrating in a place that has been reborn — with modern facilities and the same timeless beauty that made it legendary.
Getting to Abaco — Flights, Ferries & Island-Hopping
The Abacos are approximately 175 miles east of Florida — about a 1-hour flight from Miami. Getting there is easier than most couples expect.
Flights to Marsh Harbour (MHH)
American Airlines offers direct flights from Miami and Charlotte. Delta flies from Atlanta. Bahamasair connects from Nassau and West Palm Beach. Tradewind Aviation offers premium small-aircraft service from Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach (approximately 1 hour). Silver Airways flies from Fort Lauderdale. Flights from Miami start around $200 one-way.
Ferries to the Cays
From Marsh Harbour, Albury's Ferry runs regular service to Hope Town (Elbow Cay) and Man-O-War Cay — approximately 20 minutes. The Green Turtle Ferry connects to Green Turtle Cay from the Treasure Cay area — approximately 15 minutes. Ferries run throughout the day and Glenn provides complete schedules to all wedding guests.
Private Boats & Yachts
Many Abaco wedding guests arrive by private vessel. Abaco Beach Resort's 200-slip Boat Harbour Marina is a designated Bahamas Port of Entry where you can clear customs on arrival. Green Turtle Club Marina accommodates vessels up to 110 feet. Numerous charter companies operate from Marsh Harbour for island-hopping.
Glenn provides every couple with a comprehensive Abaco guest travel guide: flight options with booking links, ferry schedules from Marsh Harbour to their specific cay, accommodation recommendations, golf cart rental contacts (the primary transport on cays), and a packing checklist. Your guests won't need to figure out a thing.
Abaco Wedding Venues — Cays, Resorts & Yachts
The Abacos offer some of the most diverse and distinctive wedding settings in the Bahamas. I've performed ceremonies at every one of these locations and can match you with the perfect venue for your vision.
Hope Town — Elbow Cay
Pastel colonial village with the famous candy-striped Elbow Reef Lighthouse (one of the last hand-turned kerosene lighthouses in the world). Multiple ceremony locations: harbour-front, Atlantic-side beaches, Abaco Inn (oceanfront), and Firefly Sunset Resort (stunning sunset ceremonies). Reach by 20-min ferry from Marsh Harbour.
Green Turtle Cay
Three-mile island with New England-influenced architecture and two exceptional wedding venues. Green Turtle Club Resort & Marina offers harbour-side ceremonies, candlelit dining, and a full-service marina. Bluff House sits on 12 sea-to-sea acres with a private beach and stunning elevated views. Boat-access only — 15-min ferry from Treasure Cay.
Treasure Cay Beach
A 3.5-mile crescent of soft white sand that National Geographic ranked among the world's best beaches. Crystal-clear, calm water with a gentle slope perfect for barefoot ceremonies. Bahama Beach Club offers beachfront condos and reception coordination. On-site golf course for wedding weekend activities.
Great Guana Cay
Accessible only by boat, Great Guana Cay delivers the most private Abaco wedding experience. Seven miles of virtually untouched beaches on the Atlantic side with powdery white sand. Intimate local restaurants for reception. Glenn arranges all boat transportation for couples and guests.
Private Yachts & Marinas
The Abacos are the sailing capital of the Bahamas, and yacht weddings are Glenn's speciality. Legal ceremonies aboard private yachts, at marina docks, or anchored at a secluded cay. Abaco Beach Resort Marina (200 slips, Marsh Harbour) and Green Turtle Club Marina are popular choices for marina-based celebrations.
Abaco Beach Resort
40 beachfront acres in Marsh Harbour with 94 rooms, a 200-slip marina, multiple dining venues, and 6,000 sq ft of event space in The Marquee. The most complete resort infrastructure in the Abacos. Ideal for couples who want a traditional resort wedding with Out Islands character.
